Winter Essentials for Your Dog

Lilipet’s Top Picks to See Us Through Until Spring

I can’t be the only one who is absolutely sick of the weather right now.

Yes, yes — I know it’s winter. But by the beginning of February, running a doggy daycare and boarding kennels, I am well and truly over the cold wind, constant rain and wintry misery. Muddy fields, soggy dogs, dark mornings and even darker afternoons… I am so ready for spring.

On the positive side, we’ve finally said goodbye to January (which honestly felt like it lasted about a billion years) and are saying hello to February. Snowdrops have popped up in our driveway, so there’s definately light at the end of the tunnel 🌱

The Armageddon-style snowstorm reporting on the news is still relentless, but I’m sure that’ll soon be swapped out for heatwave headlines instead.

All this bad weather got me thinking it was the perfect time to put together a wee guide on winter essentials for your dog — the things that genuinely help us get through until spring finally shows up.

Shorter days, darker walks, colder temperatures… here’s what really makes a difference.

A Good Dog Coat

Not all dogs need (or even like!) wearing a coat — but many really do. Puppies, senior dogs, short-haired breeds and dogs with health conditions benefit most from that extra layer during winter walks.

A good coat should be practical, comfortable and easy to wear.

What to look for:

  • Warm lining (fleece or thermal fabric)
  • Adjustable straps for a snug fit
  • Coverage over the chest and belly

Perfect for cold, wet UK walks.

These are our go-to options depending on the weather — a lightweight waterproof for wet days and a warmer insulated coat when the temperature really drops.

Paw Protection

Winter conditions can be tough on paws. Cold ground, constant wetness and gritty paths can all take their toll, especially if your dog is out daily.

Using a paw balm helps protect and moisturise pads and is a simple addition to your winter routine that makes a big difference.

🐾 Lilipet’s Top Picks

A winter essential we regularly recommend to help keep paws (and noses) in good condition.

A Cosy Bed

Cold floors and draughty spots aren’t ideal — particularly for older dogs or those who feel the cold more.

A well-padded, cosy bed placed away from doors and cold areas helps dogs rest properly and stay warm, especially after muddy winter walks.

🐾 Lilipet’s Top Picks

Both are brilliant options depending on whether your dog prefers to curl up or stretch out.

Indoor Enrichment

When outdoor time is limited, keeping your dog mentally stimulated is just as important as physical exercise.

Indoor enrichment helps burn energy, prevent boredom and keep dogs settled — especially on days when walks are shorter or the weather is particularly grim.

Think:

  • Snuffle mats
  • Licki mats
  • Puzzle toys
  • Stuffed Kongs

🐾 Lilipet’s Top Picks

Perfect for keeping noses and brains busy on cold or wet days.

(I’ll be doing a full blog post on indoor enrichment on its own, as it’s such an important topic.)

Grooming Essentials

Winter inevitably means muddy paws, wet coats and frequent clean-ups.

Having a few good grooming basics on hand makes life much easier and helps keep dogs warm and comfortable once they’re back indoors.

🐾 Lilipet’s Top Picks

A great combination for drying off after walks and gentle cleaning when needed.

Extra Cosy Indoors

Some dogs really feel the cold indoors too, especially in older houses or during chilly evenings once the heating goes off.

Lightweight jumpers or pyjamas can help keep them comfortable and cosy while they relax.

🐾 Lilipet’s Top Picks

Ideal for cold nights and lazy winter evenings.

Final Thoughts

Winter might be dragging its heels, but having the right essentials makes it far more manageable — for dogs and humans alike.

With warm coats, cosy beds, indoor enrichment and a few practical grooming bits, your dog can stay comfortable and happy until spring finally arrives.

Here’s hoping February brings brighter days, drier fields and that those snowdrops are the first sign that better weather isn’t too far away 🐾💛
